Summit the Queen of the Mountains!

Hike the Alum Cave Trail to the top of this iconic mountaintop in the country’s most visited national park.

Description

After an hour of hiking, the small creek disappears and the tunnel of old growth oak, pine, and maple trees thins into small, weathered trees on the mountain’s ridge.
Looking down through the oak, maple, and pine, you notice how far down the valley is. The trail underfoot starts to dry up, turning from mud with small rocks to loose gravel, shrub roots, and larger pumpkin-sized boulders to step around. In sections, cliffs overhang the trail.

“Let’s take a 15 minute break here, and eat some snacks,” says your trip leader, Erin, a senior in psychology. “If you need to use the restroom, there is a killer view for doing your business 75 feet over there.”

“How much longer before we reach the top?” asks redheaded sophomore Ryan.

“Oh, just around the bend, or three…” she replies with a smile, “but more like an hour, hour fifteen. Then we’ll have some amazing views and can hangout or explore for a while.”

Wander up the mountain by foot for some fresh air and stories to tell your friends. At this point in the spring, the trees are starting to leaf, their tiny leaves bright green.

Photos, once posted, will be “amazing,” “jealous,” and “I want to go there!”

You can expect to hike around 8 miles roundtrip, with plenty of time to relax, enjoy the view, and take a few selfies.

You’ll feel tired at the end of the day, but stoked on bagging a summit (you know, weather and conditions allowing of course) in the fall.
