Located in the HPER Building in Room 202B, the climbing wall features 6,000 square feet of climbing space split evenly between bouldering and top roping.
The bouldering wall is 12-feet tall—the top rope wall is 32-feet tall with 12 ropes. Each area lets you climb horizontal roofs, vertical walls, slab, and we have a bouldering cave and crack climbing (5.8 & 5.12 cracks).
All levels of climbers are welcome. Many climbers have no prior climbing experience, while many started in high school.
The climbing wall is open to all current students, graduate/professional students, and faculty/staff who have a RecSports membership at no cost.
Climbing shoes, harness, and belay devices are provided at no cost for those who do not have their own equipment.
All climbers must have their current UT ID to sign in and need complete a waiver each year.
All clinics are taught at the Vol Wall. Free, but spaces are limited.
Intro to Climbing & Belay—
M,Tu, W. Starting at 6 pm for 1.5 hours
Learn how to properly climb and the use ropes to climb the top rope wall. Limit six people per session. To belay on the top rope wall, all climbers must pass a free proficiency test on belaying, harness use, and knot tying.
To just climb the top rope wall to try it out, you don’t need to pass a test. Our staff can provide a belay and help you out for free.
Belay tests are available anytime.
Lead Climbing Mini Course —
Thursdays, Feb 8, 15, 22, 2018 | 6 pm – 830 pm
Climbing outside in TN requires knowing how to lead climb and lead belay.
Over 3 evenings, this mini-course, taught by our full-time professional coordinator, teaches you the essentials of lead climbing and lead belay.
From clipping bolts to giving out slack in the rope, to cleaning anchors, and rappelling.
Limited to eight climbers. Must be able to comfortably climb 5.9 indoors on a TR. Must be top rope belay checked out.

Women’s Climb Time & Meetup —
Thursdays, 6 pm – 7:30 pm
Find camaraderie and develop a close bond over the shared passion of climbing.
Get inspiration from fellow Vol badass girls who climb, whether you have never climbed before or crank 5.11.
Climber Yoga —
Thursdays, 515pm – 6pm. 45 minutes
Find flexibility, strength, and calmness – all needed to become a solid and good climber.
Taught by a climber and certified yoga teacher, Melanie Eddington. Each week Mel provides a different series of poses, which the option to do your favorite or work out certain parts of your body.
Refillable Petzl chalk balls are sold for $5; Chalk bags can be rented for $1. Loose chalk is not allowed at the VOL Wall.
New for fall 2018, staff now provide belays anytime the wall is open, M-F. It’s perfect if your schedule doesn’t match someone else’s. Our staff is happy to give you a belay. Just ask.
Please note that 1-2 staff will rotate between all climbers wanting belays. Also new for fall 2018, you don’t need to pass a Vol Wall belay test to climb the 30 foot tall wall. If you want to belay, you must be Vol Wall belay checked.
If you know how to belay, you can belay your friend who doesn’t – your friend will use a special webbing style harness.
Climbing can be done alone or with friends. The VOL Wall is a great place to meet other climbers, relax, work out, and have fun.
